John J. Bretz, of Longwood, FL died Jan 18, 2014 at the age of 94.
He was born on Dec 10, 1919 on the family farm in Gibson County, IN and was the son of Emil and Alice Bretz. John was the seventh of eleven children. The family later moved to Evansville, IN where he resided until 1941 when he enlisted in the US Marine Corps. He served with the 1st Marine Division in the South Pacific during WWII and fought in the Battle of Guadalcanal. Following his discharge from the Marines in1945 he returned to Evansville. In 1951 John married the love of his life, Pauline (Polly) Neucks, of Evansville, IN and moved to Orlando that same year. They were married for 51 years until her death in 2003. He traveled the state of Florida for 40 years as a sales representative for a number of firms related to the floral industry. John was a devoted father, avid golfer and bridge player. He was known for his great sense of humor, practical jokes and ready smile. John adored his granddaughters and great granddaughters. He was a wonderful father-in-law. His Catholic faith was a central part of his life and for many years attended the early morning Mass every day. He was a member of St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church.
He is survived by sister Virginia Miller of Evansville, IN; son Greg Bretz (Dawn) of Altamonte Springs; son Larry Bretz (Katy) of Apopka; granddaughters Sarah Martin (Thomas) and Emily Bretz from Charlotte, NC; and great granddaughters Ellie and Claire Martin.
A memorial mass will be held at St. Mary Magdalen at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 28, 2014.
