Louis Smith Jr.
CW2 (Ret.) Louis "Smitty, Sarge" Smith Jr., 82, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, May 11, 2014, at VA Medical Center in Indianapolis.
Louis joined the armed forces early in life and was a member of the Navy, Army and Green Beret Special Forces Airborne. His armed forces career spanned 22 years, and he proudly served our country in Korea and Vietnam. He earned two Bronze Star medals and The Presidential Unit Citation, as well as many others. He later worked for Peabody Coal Mine and served as a safety consultant for several companies. He was a lifetime member of the Special Forces Association, American Legion Post 200, V.F.W. Post 3418, Knights of Columbus (4th degree), The 40 and 8, and was also a member of Elks lodge 1180.
Louis is survived by his wife of 57 years, Bettye (Barnett) Smith; children, Michael, of Laguna Beach, Calif., Lisa Smith, of Indianapolis, Ind., Lynn (Lee) Mankin, of Lebanon, Ind.; grandchildren, Aaron Morgan, of Cory, Ind., Leigh, Rosalyn and Maxwell Smith, of Huntington Beach, Calif.; great-grandchild, A.J. Morgan; nephews and niece Bernard and Susan, of Pennsylvania, and John, of Texas, Bill and Barbara Winstead, Terry Barnett, Mike and Marlane Barnett and Gary and Connie Barnett, of Boonville, Ind., Jack and Linda Barnett, of Tavares, Fla., their families, as well as many other loved nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. (CDT) Thursday, May 15, 2014 at St. Clement Catholic Church, 422 E. Sycamore St. Boonville. Visitation Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Bradley's Colonial Chapel, 1005 E. Main St. Boonville, IN 47601 and one hour before mass at Church.
