Melvin Hahn, 82, of LaPorte passed away on January 2, 2013, at 4:15 a.m. at the Sactuary at St. Pauls, South Bend, Ind., after a one year illness.
He was born on February 22, 1930, in Mt. Vernon, Ind., to Oscar and Catherine (Wolfe) Hahn. A long time LaPorte resident he came here in 1961, coming from Mt. Vernon, Ind. He retired after 42 years as a Manager of Information Systems for Whirlpool. On April 4, 1964, in LaPorte he married Janice E. Haferkamp who survives. He attended St. John Lutheran Church and was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Mt. Vernon, Ind. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran during the Korean War, LaPorte, American Legion Post #83, Michigan City Elks Lodge #432, former LaPorte Lions, avid golfer, avid baseball player and played in the semi pros. He loved caring for his yard, and loved his wife of 48 years and his family. His favorite saying was Tally-Ho-The Fox.
Melvin is survived by his wife; daughter, Kristi Hahn, of LaPorte; son, Jason (Chrissy) Hahn, of Granger, Ind.; daughter, Lori (Tom) Bagley, of LaPorte; and son, Jeffery Lambert, of Macon, Georgia; six grandchildren, Evan, Gannon, Taylor, Connor, Erin and Alanna. Also leaving three sisters, Lillian Defendorf, of Sun City, Calif., Marcella Brass, of Mt. Vernon, Ind., and Deloris Angle, of Evansville, Ind.; one brother, Oscar Jr. (June) Hahn, of Evansville, Ind.; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Olivia Brass and Elizabeth Mabrey; and two brothers, Robert Hahn and Clinton Hahn.
Funeral Service will be Saturday, January 5, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Essling Funeral Home with Pastor Ronald Brauer officiating. The visitation will be 9 and 11 a.m. on Saturday at Essling Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery following the service.
