Richard A. Riggs
Evansville, Ind.
Richard A. Riggs, 88, Riggs Jersey Farm, Evansville, Ind., passed away Sunday, June 15, 2014.
He served as president of the Future Farmers of America at Reitz High School and won the last county corn shucking contest in 1941. He graduated from Purdue University in Agriculture in 1952, and served during the Korean War teaching radio theory. He had seen dairy farming change from hand milking and mules to the modern milk pipeline. He is a member of the Indiana Livestock Breeders Association Hall of Fame. He was past president of American Dairy Association; Dairy Council of Indiana and Kentucky; and Kyana Milk Producers. A board member of National ADA, lifetime board member of United Dairy Industry Association, Board member of National Milk Producers Federation and treasurer of Dairyman Incorporated, a co-operative of 3000 members in the Southeast United States, for 25 years.
Richard was on the Purdue livestock judging team and dairy judging team and coached the 4-H dairy judging team. He judged cattle at district, state and national shows. Riggs Jersey Farm bred and owned an All-American winning cow, and won the State Fair Premier Breed and Exhibitor banners, and showed Jerseys at the Scott-Vanderburgh County Fair for over 50 years. He was a lifetime member of Blue Grass United Methodist Church holding many positions including lay leader, Finance Chairmen, and member of the building and vision committee at age 85. He enjoyed visiting with others and serving his community. He was the first county chairman of Christian Rural Overseas Program (CROP).
Richard is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jeanine; daughters, Ann and husband, Dale White, of Boonville, Ind., Jan and husband, Tom Weiss, of Evansville, Ind., Patty and husband, Anthony Marcum, of Newburgh, Ind., Pastor Jeanne and husband, Sandy Winter, Danville, Ind., Nancy and husband, Jeff Richards, of Granville, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, Gabe Weiss, Jason and wife, Maribeth Weiss, Kara and husband, Dustin Sergesketter, Katy Marcum, Chris and wife, Kristin Winter, Megan and husband, Jalen Mattingly, Brian and wife, Bre Winter, Austin, Cameron, and Evan Richards; eight great-grandchildren, Zethian and Rowyn Weiss, Henry and Maggie Weiss, Cruz and Duke Sergesketter, Anna and Allison Winter; brother, Ross and his wife, Mae, of Danville, Ind.; sister-in-law, Lois Riggs; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by younger brother, Floyd.
Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at Ziemer Funeral Home North Chapel, 6300 N First Ave, Evansville, IN 47710 and will continue from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bluegrass United Methodist Church, 14240 Petersburg Rd, Evansville, IN 47725.
Funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at the church with Rev. Doug Heiman officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery where the Retired Veteran Memorial Club will conduct graveside services.
