Newburgh, Ind.
Richard E.S. Diggs, 82, of Newburgh, IN, passed away on April 19, 2014, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Dick was born on January 11, 1932, to William and Jessie (Erdman) Diggs, in Baltimore, MD. He received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University and was well known as an avid Wolfpack/ACC fan. Dick owned Employer's Insurance Service and won numerous national insurance awards over his career.
Dick served in the army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the VFW Post 1114 and the American Legion in Newburgh. As president of the University of Southern Indiana Varsity Club, Dick was an active supporter of the USI basketball program and leaves many close friends from this affiliation. Dick was a member of the selection committee that hired Bruce Pearl as USI's head basketball coach. He was the men's tennis coach at Mater Dei High School for several years. Dick was an avid golfer (three lifetime hole-in-ones) and a member of Rolling Hills Country Club, where he greatly enjoyed his time with their staff and his fellow golfing buddies. Dick was a lifelong learner who was always striving to improve himself.
For the past decade, he and Brenda spent January/February in North Padre Island enjoying golf and many "Winter Texans". Dick also appreciated westerns, a good game of bridge, Maryland crab cakes, any kind of cookie, and "broken-in" clothes.
He is survived by his loving wife of 21 years Brenda (Harris) Diggs, of Newburgh; son, Maj. John Diggs, U.S. Army, of Dallas, TX; stepdaughter, Stacy Brungardt (Mike), of Lee's Summit, MO; stepson, Scott Harris (Kathy), of Newburgh; grandchildren, Cori and Taylor Brungardt, Kelsey, Ivan, Lindsay and Alex Harris; along with nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother, Jesse Diggs, of Stonington, CT.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Bill Diggs.
A celebration of Dick's life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel, 5330 Washington Avenue, with Sister Jennifer Miller officiating.
Friends may visit the family from 3 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at Boone Funeral Home, East Chapel.
