Robert Arthur Metz, born November 14, 1947, passed away at home on November 30, 2012 after facing a full-out, 13-month fight with glioblastoma multiforme.
Bob was born to Ruth (Barker) and John Metz in Evansville. He graduated from F.J. Reitz High School in 1965. He was awarded a four-year scholarship from Whirlpool Corporation to attend Purdue University and graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor's of Science in Aeronautical Engineering. While at Purdue, Bob sat first chair saxophone for his entire university career and played in the Rose Bowl in 1967. Bob began a 38-year career with the Whirlpool Corporation in August 1969 in Information Technology, ending his career as a Senior Technical Analyst, creating code that is still in use today.
Bob, who was an Eagle Scout, served as scoutmaster for Stevensville Troup 603 when his sons were young. In his retirement he enjoyed traveling with his wife, reinvigorating his love of playing the saxophone and most importantly developing his skill as a brewmaster. He received a certificate from Chicago's World Brewing Academy, and the popularity of Bob's Baroda Brew was growing with a small but steady following.
Bob married Donna G. Nelli on October 15, 1977 in St. Joseph who survives. He is also survived by sons John (Heather) Metz of St. Joseph and Brian (Desiree Del Mundo, fiancée) Metz of Houston TX; sister Elizabeth (Michael) Stepek of Boonville, IN; brother John Frederick (Patti) Metz of Allen TX; nieces Jessica (Jeremy) Johnson, Jennifer (Darin) Schrock, Katy Metz, Emily Herman, Meredith Herman and Rachel Herman; nephews Jason (Mandi) Johns, Kyle Johns, Paul Herman and Jake Metz.
Bob was preceded in death by his brother Richard, his parents and maternal and paternal grandparents.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd, St. Joseph. A celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home; officiated by Rev Marvin Herman. Memorials in Bob's name may be made to Stevensville's Boy Scout Troup 603, Twin City Players, or the Krasl Art Center.
