Ross L. Compton, 94, of Evansville, passed away at 7:36 a.m. Saturday, October 26, 2013, at Good Samaritan Home.
Ross was born July 7, 1919, in Keensburg, Ill., the son of William and Goldie (Miller) Compton. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps serving during WWII and at Pearl Harbor. Ross saw combat on Iwo Jima and was at the bottom of the hill when the flag was raised and was one of the "Chosin Few". He also served during the Korean Conflict. He was a decorated war hero. Ross retired from the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier. He enjoyed listening to gospel music especially anything by The Gaithers.
He is survived by children, Judy Young and Donnie Compton, both of Evansville; siblings, Enola "Tudie" Duke (Harry), of Henderson, Ky., Katherine Dooley and Wilma "Billie" Reising, both of Evansville, and Hubert Compton (Sylvia), of Fla.; grandchildren, Angie McGee (Chad), Greg Young (Jessica), Jeff Young (Laura) and Jonathan Compton; nine great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Betty Compton, in February 2006; and brother, Ivan Compton.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 30, 2013, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel - 5330 Washington Avenue, Evansville with Ross's great-grandson, Nick McGee, officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, where Vanderburgh County Retired Veterans Club will perform military rites.
Friends may call from 3 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at Boone Funeral Home - East Chapel and again from 9 a.m. until time of service at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
