Ruth Threlkeld Hall passed away at her home on June 6, 2014 at the age of 92. She was born Nov. 20, 1921 in Chicago but lived in Memphis, TN near the city limits where the family had acreage, animals, fruit trees and grape vines to swing on. Her parents were education minded and hard working and set an example to follow of honesty, intellectual curiosity, concern for others and a strong work ethic. Ruth attended Vanderbilt University majoring in Chemistry with minors in Math and Biology graduating in 1943. She was President of the Independents and member and officer of the Acapella Choir. She was especially proud of being selected by the faculty as one of 20 Junior Class girls to be inducted into ATHENA, an honorary sorority recognizing leadership, scholarship and character. She was captain of Intramural sports teams - basketball and swimming and received the Sportsman Award at the Finals for the Basketball tournament. Ruth continued her education with a Masters of Education and a Masters in Chemistry from IU and took classes toward her PhD in chemistry. Ruth believed in giving back and was president of the Evansville Retired Teachers Association (ERTA), chaired the "Travel Sharing" group for 20 years and was on the audit and budget committee for many years. She received the Indiana Retired Teachers Association (IRTA) CLOCK AWARD for Outstanding Volunteer of the Year for District 7 in Southern IN. She volunteered with AARP-IRS to help the elderly and others complete their tax forms each spring. Ruth did her own taxes until 2012. She was a Girl Scout Leader, member and on the board of the Evansville Museum of Arts, History and Science, Chair of the Science Committee several years and on the Art Committee and supporter of the EMAS. Ruth was a member of the McCutchanville Methodist Church for 60 years and during that time chaired the Administrative Board several times, was chair of the Education committee and the only woman on the Construction Committee when the new sanctuary was built. She chaired the Mission Ministries for decades, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and was church representative for Habitat for Humanity.
Ruth's true love was for was her family and her students, many of whom she communicated with until her death. Her beloved husband of 68 years, James, died in Sept. 2012. Ruth is survived by two of her four children, Ginny Hall Hodowal of Indianapolis, and J. Tim Hall of Evansville. Grandchildren Laura Hodowal Miller (Paul), Melissa Hodowal, Brad Holmdohl, Amy Holmdohl, Jamey Hall Morse (Rob), Shane Hall (Tosha), Isaac Hall (Natasha), Kristi Hall, Hanna Sigler and Grace Sigler and 14 Great Grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by daughter Jan Hall Holmdohl and son, J. Duncan Hall.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 pm, Sunday, June 15th, 2014 at McCutchanville Community Church, 9505 Petersburg Road, Evansville, IN 47725 with Rev. Jarmon Perkins officiating. Visitation from 12:00 pm to 12:30 pm preceding the service. In lieu of flowers, Ruth wishes that contributions be made to the church or to the Ruth T. Hall Scholarship she established 27 years ago for students at Central High School where she taught for 22 years. Condolences may be made online at www.browningfuneral.com.
