Thomas George Scheitlin, 88, peacefully passed away on Thursday, January 17, 2013, at VNA Charlier Hospice Center in Evansville.
Born in Evansville, Indiana, on September 19, 1924, Tom was the second son of George and Lenora (Fehn) Scheitlin. After attending St. Joseph Grade School City, Tom attended and graduated from Reitz Memorial High School in 1942. He studied at Evansville College for one year and then attended the University of Notre Dame from 1943 through 1945, as a member of the Navy V-12 Officer's Candidate Program. Tom served four months of additional naval training, including three months on the Montpelier, and was commissioned in 1946, as an Ensign USNR (United States Naval Reserve). Returning to Notre Dame, Tom graduated in January of 1947, with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. He was promoted to the commissioned officer rank of LTJG (Lieutenant, junior grade) USNR in 1950.
In 1947, Tom began working as an engineer with International Harvester, later moving to Seagram's Distillery, finally joining Seeger Refrigeration in 1948. After Seeger's merger with Whirlpool in 1955, Tom continued at Whirlpool for 36 years, retiring in 1984, as General Manager of Product Engineering Refrigeration Group Products.
Tom married Ann DeJean on February 5, 1949, and together they had eight children.
Tom was a former member of the Oak Meadow Golf Club, Coterie Dance Club and Friday Nite Dance Club, UL (Underwriter's Laboratory) Industry Advisory Board, AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) Engineering Technical Committee, University of Evansville Industry Advisory Board, USI (University of Southern Indiana) Industry Advisory Board, USI Foundation and ASHRAE National Products Standards Committee. Tom was also an active member of St Benedict Cathedral and served on the finance committee for several years.
Tom is survived by his wife of 63 plus years, Ann (DeJean); son, Joseph (Laurie) Plymouth, Min.; their children, Kayla and Charles; daughter, Linda (Ed) Wendholt, of St. Joseph, Mich., their children, Monica (Tom) Single, Amy, Jim and Cheryl (Jonathan) White; daughter, Barbara (Doug) Smith Indianapolis, Ind., their daughters, Kyle and Torrey; daughter, Mary (Jerry) Moss Baylis, of Ill., their children Jason (Megan) Moss, Jaron (Ashley) Moss, Megan and Michelle; son, William (Kim), of Evansville, Ind.; son, Robert, of St. Joseph, Mich.; and son, David (Deborah), of Fort Wayne, Ind. Also surviving are 10 great-grandchildren, Jacob, Matthew and Kaitlyn Single, Jackson, Madeleine, Jonathan and Mckinley Moss, and Emma, Chloe and Isaac Moss. Tom is also survived by his sister, Mary Crabb; sisters-in-law, Joyce Scheitlin and Rita Smith, of Evansville, Ind.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his oldest son, James, in 1955; and brothers, Robert and George.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, January 20, 2013, at Ziemer Funeral Home East, 800 S. Hebron Avenue, Evansville, IN 47714, with a 7 p.m. memorial service.
Funeral services will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday January 21, 2013, at the funeral home and will continue with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Benedict Cathedral, 1328 Lincoln Avenue, Evansville, IN, with Father Ted Tempel officiating.
Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ann and Tom Scheitlin Endowment for St. Benedict Cathedral Catholic Church or the Thomas and Ann Scheitlin Scholarship Endowment for Reitz Memorial High School.
