Albert J. Griffith Jr. Obituary
Dr. Albert J. Griffith Jr., who served Our Lady of the Lake University as an administrator, including academic dean, and professor of English for 45 years, died Friday, June 28, 2013. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the Development Office at Our Lady of the Lake University, 411 SW 24th St., San Antonio, Texas 78207, in care of the Albert J. Griffith Endowed Fellowship, which is awarded annually to graduate students in English and communication arts. Born in Fort Worth in 1932, the son of Albert J. "Bert" Griffith Sr., a Fort Worth Star-Telegram newsman, and Dorothy Byron Griffith, a high school chemistry teacher, he graduated maxima cum laude from St. Edward's University in Austin. He served in the U.S. Army and received a master of arts and a doctoral degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Griffith was a prolific scholar, authoring numerous articles, bibliographies, editions, poems and book reviews, as well as a book on author Peter Taylor. He received numerous teaching awards and was honored with the title of professor emeritus upon his retirement. Survivors: His beloved wife of 56 years, Elizabeth Jansing Griffith; children, Katherine Griffith of Los Angeles, Calif., John Griffith of Boerne, Carol Griffith Dickerson of Oak Point and Mark Griffith of Austin; daughters-in-law and son-in-law, Laurie Hundl Griffith, Darla Fjeld and Joe Dickerson; grandchildren, Austin and Brian Griffith and Sarah, Joshua and Laura Dickerson; brother, Bill Griffith and wife, Pati, of Washington, D.C.; and sister, Mary Griffith Jackson and husband, Bill, of Boerne.
