Arthur Claron Murphy Obituary
Arthur Claron Murphy, 88, a longtime resident of Fort Worth, passed away in his sleep Wednesday, April 16, 2014. Funeral: 1 p.m. Friday, May 2, in Greenwood Garden Chapel. Entombment: Greenwood Mausoleum. Art, or Murph as most of his friends called him, was born in Corinne, Utah, on June 16, 1925, the son of Emma LoVean Jensen Murphy and Milton Floyd Murphy. He had six siblings, all having predeceased him except for his sister, Ruth. During World War II he joined the Navy V-12 program and was with the occupation forces in Japan. After he was honorably discharged from the Navy he completed his education, obtaining a BS and MS in engineering from the University of Missouri. He taught at University of Missouri until 1951, when he accepted a job with Convair (eventually General Dynamics, then Lockheed) as an aeronautical engineer. He enjoyed a long a successful career there until his retirement in 1994, and was a nationally recognized expert on wing design. He married Dorothy Glenn Leachman in 1945, and they had two children, Richard and Linda, who both survive him. Dorothy died in 2012. Arthur had numerous hobbies. He was a life grand master bridge player and an avid gardener. He built a hydroponic greenhouse in his back yard and grew enormous, tasty tomatoes. A lifelong musician, he played in the Paul Cherches Band in college which featured the singer Chris Connor. He was a member of the Westcliff United Methodist Church choir and served as its director for a period. He also was a member of Fort Worth's Schola Cantorum. After his retirement he played piano in a trio that performed in several Fort Worth venues. He was a composer and arranger, primarily of choral music, and had several of his compositions published. He was an exemplary man who loved and was loved by his family, his friends and his community. Survivors: Daughter, Linda Nelson; son, Richard Murphy and wife, Melinda; grandchildren, Taylor and Adrienne Murphy; and great-grandchild, Ashlyn Murphy.
