Bruce Edward Toppin Obituary
Bruce Edward Toppin, M.D., 95, passed away Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013. Graveside service: 4 p.m. Thursday in Greenwood Memorial Park. Bruce was born Nov. 8, 1918, in Cambridge City, Ind., to O.U. and Agnes Toppin. He attended Earlham College, graduating in the top of his class in 1940. He then enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was a pilot during World War II. He was a captain and then promoted to major during the war and received an Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross for his contribution to instrument flying. In December 1944, he married Mary Louise Hughes, to whom he was married 68 years. Bruce attended the University of Virginia Medical School, graduating in 1950. He did his residency at the University of Michigan and in 1953 started private practice of medicine and surgery in Fort Worth, where he practiced for 50 years. He belonged to Shady Oaks Country Club and the Fort Worth Boat Club where he was a very active sailor for many years. He was an avid skier and hiker and spent many years doing both in the Rockies, especially Aspen, Colo., also Europe and Canada until age 85. Bruce was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louise; grandson, Andrew McDonald; and son-in-law, Buzz Cranz. Survivors: Son, Bruce Toppin Jr.; daughters, Rose Anne Cranz and Mary Beth McDonald and husband, Scott McDonald; granddaughters, Margaret Toppin, Foster Cranz and Leigh Anne McDonald; grandson, Bruce Toppin III and wife, Katie; and great-granddaughters, Claire and Sara. Bruce was a man of great character and integrity and will be missed by his family and all who knew him.
