Byron Arthur Lax, 71, passed away at his home in Arlington, surrounded by his family, Tuesday evening, May 7, 2013. Service: A celebration of Byron's life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1200 W. Green Oaks Blvd., Arlington. Memorials: To honor the memory of Byron, in lieu of flowers, please send gifts to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, www.lls.org; the Trinity United Methodist Church pipe organ fund, www.trinityumcarlington.org; Schola Cantorum of Texas, www.scholatexas.com. Byron was born Dec. 18, 1941, in Taylor. He grew up in Elgin and graduated from Elgin High School, where he was the offensive center #51 and helped lead his team to the state championship football game in 1959. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1964 and was always very proud of being a Longhorn! During his time at UT, Byron joined the Marine Reserves. Byron married the love of his life, Phyllis, in 1969. They moved to Arlington in 1985 and have lived in and enjoyed the same neighborhood community for 28 years. Byron was known for his booming bass voice and sang in the church choir at Trinity United Methodist Church for over 20 years, as well as singing with Schola Cantorum of Texas for five years. Byron's favorite thing to do was play golf. (How many golf clubs does one need?) He was very proud of his hole-in-one on the third hole at Shady Valley Golf Club! Byron was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Marjorie Lax, and his oldest sister, Glenda Swenson. Survivors: His beloved wife of 43 years, Phyllis; his children, Derron Lax, Brian Lax, Lauren McCord and her husband, Cory McCord, and Leslie Lax. He will be missed by his beautiful grandchildren, Zachary and Julianne Lax, and Reese and Claire McCord; sister, Marilyn Boatmun; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews who were much loved by him.
