Dorothy J. Turpin Obituary
Dorothy J. Turpin, 76, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2014. Memorial service: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Edge Park United Methodist Church, 5616 Crowley Road, Fort Worth, Texas 76134, at the southwest corner of Interstate 20 and Crowley Road. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Edge Park United Methodist Church Permanent Endowment Fund or to Community Hospice of Texas, 6100 Western Place, Suite 105, Fort Worth, Texas 76107. Dorothy was born Dec. 15, 1937, in Lorain, Ohio, to Robert Hardin Miles and Elizabeth "Betty" M. Buzzard Miles. At age 10, she and her family relocated to Daingerfield. After graduation from Daingerfield High School, she attended Methodist School of Nursing in Dallas, receiving her nursing diploma, then earned her BSN degree at Texas Christian University. She was employed to teach nursing at the John Peter Smith School of Nursing in Fort Worth. That school later became the University of Texas System School of Nursing at Fort Worth and later became the University of Texas at Arlington College of Nursing. Dorothy earned her master's degree at Texas Woman's University in Denton and completed all the course work for a doctorate, except the dissertation, at Nova University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In January 1979, Dorothy was a founding member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter FH in Arlington. P.E.O. is a philanthropic, educational organization whose major objective is to provide increased opportunity for women. After retirement, Dorothy was especially proud to have contributed to the education of a multitude of nurses, and enjoyed reading, travel, church lay service, P.E.O. and socializing with friends. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors: Loving husband of 46 years, Robert L. Turpin; brother, Guy P. Miles and spouse, Vivian, of Las Vegas; sister, Gayle M. Glass and spouse, William R. Glass, of Daingerfield; nieces, Shelley S. Miles and Sara E. Miles of Las Vegas and Katie G. Ward of College Station; grandniece, Emma Ward; and grandnephews, Jonah and Joshua Ward.
