Eugene Freddie "Gene" Luckstead Sr. Obituary
Eugene Freddie "Gene" Luckstead Sr. of Amarillo, passed from this life to his heavenly home on Tuesday, Dec 17, 2013. Service: For more information, see the family website at Memorials: A memorial fund, the Dr. Eugene F. Luckstead Sr. Memorial Fund, has been set up at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in order to continue his legacy of both directly helping children as well as facilitating the continued education of medical students and medical residents. Gene was born Nov. 20, 1938, in Anamosa, Iowa, and grew up in Wyoming, Iowa. He graduated from medical school at the University of Iowa in 1963. He completed a residency in pediatrics while serving in the Navy as a lieutenant commander. He continued his naval service until 1968. He then completed a fellowship in pediatric cardiology at the University of Kansas. Gene served as the medical director of Cook Children's Hospital during his time in Fort Worth. Throughout his professional life, Gene served at many fine institutions in the roles of medical director, medical faculty, and professor of Pediatrics. Finally, he served as professor of Pediatrics at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center teaching medical students and residents while continuing to take care of children in his practice as a pediatric cardiologist. As passionate as Gene was about the field of medicine, his family and friends were even more beloved to him. He was the consummate family man, and he spent his life in devotion to his wife and in support of his children and grandchildren in their endeavors. Selflessly serving others was the hallmark of Gene's life. He cherished people and took great joy in helping his patients. Additionally, he was passionate about teaching and loved mentoring medical students, residents, and young physicians. He was an extensively published author of articles and texts on the topics of pediatric cardiology and pediatric and adolescent sports medicine. He was a worldwide guest speaker on topics concerning sports medicine as well as being the recipient of numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the fields of pediatrics, cardiology, and sports medicine. Survivors: Gene is survived by his wife and best friend of 52 years, Margaret Luckstead; his children, Eugene Freddie Luckstead Jr. and his wife, Stephanie, Ann Gosdin and her husband, Brad, and Erik Luckstead and his wife, Kay; his grandchildren, Luke, Mattea and Sarah Luckstead, Mary Gosdin, and Grant and Logan Luckstead; his sisters, GaeAnn Steuri and Gayle Burgess; his nieces and nephew; other relatives; and a host of adoring friends.
