George Tolbert was born Oct. 23, 1931, in Miami, Texas, the son of Jody Oscar Tolbert and Alpha Gertrude Lard Tolbert. As a child in Miami, he milked cows daily, cleaned the Roberts County Courthouse, enjoyed fishing and being outdoors, participated in FFA, and worked in his father's meat locker plant. He graduated from Miami High School in 1950, along with six other students in his graduating class. After high school, he moved to Abilene, where he continued to date and then marry Mary Jo Tolbert that same year. The couple moved to College Station, where he studied at Texas A&M University, and graduated with a doctor of veterinarian medicine in 1956. After graduation, George and Mary Jo moved to Hamilton, where they brought up seven children. Upon moving to Hamilton, he immediately opened a veterinary clinic and continued to practice as a veterinarian in Hamilton for over 50 years. George loved his family, his community, and his church-Park Heights Church of Christ, where he led singing, preached part time, and served as an elder for several decades. He spent much of his free time working with the church youth group and young families, and, earlier in his career, preached at Pottsville. He gave to his community by judging pet shows at the Dove Festival, serving on the Hamilton ISD School Board and providing low cost pet vaccination clinics. He also loved singing barbershop style music. Some of his fondest memories, however, were being at the lake and fishing. Mary Jo and George were married for 61 years, before she died in 2012. George was predeceased by his brother, Bill Tolbert; his sisters, Fannie Blanch Osborne and Lola Simpson; and his grandchild, Stephen Tolbert. Special thanks to loving caregiver, Jessica New. Survivors: He is survived by his sisters, Mary Wold and Ina Lee Seuhs; brother, Jimmie Tolbert; children, John Charles and wife, Denise, of Midland, David William and wife, Sherry, of Oak Ridge, N.C., Ruth Suzanne Sheppard and husband, Scott, of Midland, Joe Derrell and wife, Heather, of North Richland Hills, Vivian Clyde and husband, Russ, of Colleyville, Luisa Kay Hillje and husband, Scott, and Mitchell Strail and wife, Melacris, of Austin; 18 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
