Hulin "Hoot" Smith Obituary
Hulin "Hoot" Smith, 86, a man known for his wisdom and wit, was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013. Service: 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Chapel. Visitation: 11 a.m. Wednesday. Interment: noon Thursday in Haven of Memories Cemetery, Canton. Hulin "Hoot" Smith was the son of George and Stella Smith and was raised in Grand Saline. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he was a student athlete playing football for North Texas Agricultural College and then Texas A&M, from which he graduated in 1950. From 1950-1995 he was an educator, coach and athletic director for the school districts of Grand Saline ISD for 10 years and the remaining 35 years for the Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD. One of his many talents was his ability to bring people together as a team in order to implement programs for the benefit of each and every child. He was known for saying "teach the children well so they can reap the benefits of a quality developmental program and be able to participate in a safe, satisfying and successful environment." Most important of all, Hoot had the privilege to serve the congregation as an elder at Westside church of Christ in Irving for the last 28 years of his life. Survivors: Loving wife of 59 years, Patricia Smith; son, U. Mark Smith and wife, Staci; daughter, Marci and husband, John Deal, all of Bedford; "Daddy Hoot's" grandchildren, Lexy, Stetson and Hudson Smith and Jackson Deal; many cherished nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Mary Alyce Smith of Houston.
