This course was interrupted by his service in the Navy during the Korean War. He graduated from OCS at Newport, R.I., and served aboard the USS Manatee, a tanker, as liquid cargo officer, damage control and firefighting officer. He attended courses for these at Treasure Island and Pearl Harbor and received commendations for excellence from both. He married Shirley during this service and they moved to New York where he completed his MBA degree. He was elected to the honorary fraternity. He started his career in petrochemicals at Esso Standard Oil in various locations. Other work took him to Texas, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia. On retiring from Borg Warner Chemicals, he came to Fort Worth to join the Western Co. as its purchasing director until the company moved. He was an avid sports fan, adopting the Yankees as his team when he was 6 and saw no reason to change. He was an outstanding bridge player and taught beginner and intermediate courses for Tarrant County College in the continuing and senior education programs. He had a great sense of humor and never ran out of jokes. He was a member of St. Stephen Presbyterian Church and served in the choir. He was predeceased by his son, James Randolph, in 2012.
