Jean Hiler Obituary
Jean Wilhelmina Hiler, 92, died peacefully in her home Monday, Dec. 30, 2013. Funeral Mass: 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6, at St. Maria Goretti, Arlington: Rosary: 10:30 a.m. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Porch Light Foundation (http://mariannebearddo.org/) or the Molly Hollar Wildscape (http://thewildscape.org/). Jean was a remarkable woman full of innocence, talent, resourcefulness, creativity, beauty, generosity and much love. She was born Feb. 7, 1921, in Savannah, Ga., to Frederick and Annie Hesse. While attending nursing school at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, she met her future husband, Eddie Hiler, on a blind date. Soon after their wedding, they moved to California and eventually grew deep roots in Texas. A child of the Depression, she watched her pennies and used her creativity to make so many things special for her family. She made birthdays a celebration. Her cakes were iced houses, delicious boats and majestic locomotives. On Christmas Eve she was the biggest kid, having an almost impossible time going to sleep in anticipation of everybody opening gifts. She made hobbyhorses and wooden rifles, rag dolls and hand woven art. She quilted and she painted in oil. She was an accomplished woodcarver and photographer. Gardening was a favorite activity. "I love the rain because of the garden," she wrote her mother-in-law. "Every day something new happens. Another row comes up or another bunch of flowers starts to bud or bloom." She enjoyed volunteering at the Molly Hollar Wildscape greenhouse, propagating native plants with many friends. Jean was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors: Sons, Robert Hiler and wife, Maryellen, Frederick Hiler and wife, Sandy, and Danny Hiler and wife, Nancy; daughters, Marian Hiler, Ann Knudsen and husband, Paul, and Stephanie Bledsoe and husband, Ray; daughter-in-law, Helen Hiler; 16 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
