Jerome Lefede Thomas, 86, radio and television journalist, entered rest Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, at his residence. Funeral: 1 p.m. Saturday at historic Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, 116 Elm St. Interment: Cedar Hill Memorial Park. Visitation: 1 to 6 p.m. Friday at historic Baker Funeral Home. Rosary: 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church, 1001 E. Terrell Ave. Jerome L. Thomas was born May 11, 1927, in Fort Worth. A graduate of I.M. Terrell High School and Dillard University, he was a veteran of the United States Army. Mr. Thomas had a long and distinguished career in media communications in the DFW market. He worked as a news reporter and community affairs director at KNOK/970 AM 107.5 FM radio. Jerry was a pioneer black broadcaster at KTVT/ Channel 11 television, where he hosted "What About People," a local show highlighting events and personalities in the black community. In 2008, he was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. He was also cofounder of LaVida newspaper and Sojourner Truth Theater Guild. A member of Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church, he became the first black president of the Fort Worth Diocese Catholic School Board. Survivors: Wife of 59 years, Jessyl A. Thomas; sons, Jerome L. Thomas Jr. (Brenda) and Jeffrey L. Thomas; daughter, Jessica L. Thomas; sisters, Beverly J. Thomas, Barbara L. King, Janice M. Hardgraves and Matey M. Prestidge; grandchildren, JaPriest Thomas (Chris), Jeffrey Thomas Jr. (Darlene), JaWebb Thomas, Jordan Thomas and Janesha Thomas; great-grandchildren, Jazmyne, Jaelah, Chloe, Dezlon, DeWaylin and Darlesa Thomas; a host of other family members: and many friends.
