Joan W. Carter Obituary
Joan Winnick Carter, 83, loving mother and homemaker, died peacefully in her Fort Worth home on Friday, July 12, 2013. Service: 9:30 a.m. Monday at Mount Olivet Chapel. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Mount Olivet Funeral Home. Memorials: Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, P.O. Box 1890, Amarillo, Texas 79174-0001; or Community Hospice, 6100 Western Place, Suite 105, Fort Worth, Texas 76107. Joan was born Nov. 14, 1929, in Rock Island, Ill. She moved to Fort Worth with her family at the age of 9. She graduated from Arlington Heights High School. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Texas in interior design. Prior to marrying, she worked as an interior decorator, taught elementary art education and traveled the world with her dearest friends. Joan married P.J. Carter, M.D., in 1956 and they made their family home on the shores of Lake Worth. She and Pete raised four wonderful children. In her later years, she devoted 20 years of her time and passion to teaching adult basic education/ESL. A consummate lover of people, her home and heart were always open and welcoming to all who entered, creating a legacy of love that will endure through all those she touched for many generations to come. Survivors: Daughter, Catherine Schmidt, M.D., and husband, Frank Schmidt, M.D., of Cody, Wyo.; son, James Carter, M.D., and wife, Nancy, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; daughter, Virginia Carter, J.D., and husband, Tom Benyshek, of Fort Worth; son, Troy L. Carter, M.D., and wife, Kathryn, of Abilene; nephew, David E. Jones and wife, Oxana, of Austin; grandchildren, U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. Frank Jr. "Hal," Virginia and Jackson Schmidt of Cody, Wyo., Sara and Daniel Elrod, Ty and Amanda, Christy and Caety Carter of Tennessee, Jared and Hayden Benyshek of Fort Worth, Caleb Troy and Stephen Joseph Carter of Abilene; great-grandchildren, Cathryn Anne Elrod and James Taylor Carter III of Tennessee; sisters, Barbara Williams of Dallas and Myrna Winnick of Fort Worth.
