Joseph W. "Winn" Dalley Obituary
Winn Dalley, Dad, Poppy, friend, teacher, role model and beloved husband of Alice, peacefully passed away on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013. He was 95 years old. A reception to joyfully celebrate Winn's life will be held Friday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at River Legacy Science Center, 703 NW Green Oaks Blvd., Arlington, 76006. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, please make donations to River Legacy Foundation or online at www.riverlegacy.org. Born Aug. 12, 1918, Winn came from a humble upbringing in rural Idaho and made an indelible mark on the world. A veteran of World War II, he was highly decorated in the Army Air Corps/U.S. Air Force and achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel. Winn met and married the love of his life, Alice Sawtelle, while in training at Randolph Field in San Antonio. Together they had five children. Winn studied engineering at the University of Idaho. He then completed his master's and Ph.D. in engineering mechanics at the University of Texas. Winn had a 25-year academic career at UT Arlington where he served as department head and ultimately associate dean of engineering. He taught many individuals who made great contributions in their fields including Apollo 12 astronaut Alan Bean. In the final two years of his career, he was a visiting professor at the United States Military Academy at West Point. A dedicated Christian, Winn loved life and his magnetic personality lifted the spirits of those around him. His sense of humor, faith and care for his fellow human beings stood as rich gifts to everyone fortunate enough to have known him. Winn was preceded in death by his son, Joe Dalley. Survivors: His wife, Alice; three daughters, Ann Cavender and Jill Hill of Arlington, Kim Ritchie of Syracuse, N.Y.; son, Nick of Dripping Springs; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
