Robert Lee Nettles Obituary
Robert Lee Nettles, 93, passed away Monday, March 10, 2014. Funeral: 10 a.m. Saturday at The Hills Church of Christ, North Richland Hills. Interment: Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Mount Olivet. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Foster's Home for Children, 1779 N. Graham St., Stephenville, Texas 76401; or Tipton Home, 1000 N. Broadway Ave., Tipton, Okla. 73570. Robert was born May 26, 1920, in Box Church to Stella and John Emory Nettles. He grew up on the family farm in the Groesbeck area where he attended school. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937 at the age of 17 and worked at building state parks. Robert served aboard the Navy destroyer USS Kendrick during World War II. In 1945 he went to school on the GI Bill and received a college degree. Upon graduation he went to work for Texas Electric Service Co. of Fort Worth in the transmission section of the power department as a data analyst. Robert retired in 1983 after working 32 years for the utility company. He met and married Johnnie Ruth Wallace in 1961, they enjoyed traveling, gardening and cooking together. Robert was so well known for his peanut brittle that he became known as "The Candy Man." He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 36 years, Johnnie Nettles. Survivors: Nieces, Martha Martin (Guy Martin Jr.), Jo Boyd (Stanley), Jean Nettles, Billie Sharon Ticknor, Pat Lincecum, Peggy Cravens (Jim), Jeane O'Brien (Jim), Virginia McCoy and Patricia Collins (Jerry); nephews, Morris Nettles, Perry Nettles(Karen) and John Stockton; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
