William Frank Roberts Obituary
William Frank Roberts, 92, passed away peacefully Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, with his family by his side. Memorial service: 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, Park Row and Collins in Arlington. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances be made to the Wounded Warrior Project that Master Sgt. Roberts supported on a regular basis. Frank was born May 17, 1921, to Richard and Hattie Roberts in Mount Airy, N.C., where he grew up with nine brothers and sisters. Once he graduated from high school in Mount Airy he joined the United States Marine Corps and fought in the "Banana Wars" of Central America and in World War II on Guadalcanal and Peleliu in the South Pacific where 10,695 of the 11,000 Japanese troops stationed there were killed while U.S. forces lost over 9,800 troops. He retired in 1959 as a master sergeant and moved his family to Arlington, where he started a second career in clothing sales and worked a five-state area for the next 30 years. He recently had a letter published in the Marine Corps magazine, "Leatherneck," which was one of his greatest honors. It depicted his military career while highlighting the most prominent generation of the 21st century. He was a friend, a parent, a gentleman and, above all, a warrior. He will be greatly missed. Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Helene Roberts, and several other brothers and sisters. Survivors: Son, Lee Roberts and wife, Charlene; daughter, Anita Tye and husband, Tom; grandsons, Scott Roberts and wife, Kim, and Aaron Tye; sister, Renee Belton; and brother, Bill Roberts.
