Billy King

Billy King, age 82 of Murfreesboro, died August 20, 2013 from complications following a heart attack.

He was born in Cannon County to the late Elvis and Bobbi Stoner King. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Becky; three brothers, George, Jim and Wade; and two sisters, Christine and Irene Duggin.

He was a 1950 graduate of Auburntown High. He is a Marine and fought during the Korean War. After his service in the Marines, he attended Middle Tennessee State, then was hired at General Electric where he worked until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of East Main Church of Christ where he served many years as a deacon. He enjoyed gardening and his vegetable garden was featured on Bill Hall's gardening show on Channel 4. He also loved to fish, and many of his friends and family enjoyed a "Bill and Peg Fish Fry." He was an avid whittler, seldom being found during his spare time without a stick of cedar and a pocket knife in his hands. Children were enthralled by his cedar shavings, and affectionately referred to him as the "Whittlin' Man".

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Peggy Garvin King; a son, Donny (Cara) King of Springfield TN; five grandchildren, Andy (Sheena) Johnson of Morrison, TN, Danielle (Dustin) Cunningham of Murfreesboro, Seth (Jenna) King of Memphis, Ryan (Maite) King and Bethany King of Springfield TN; three great-grandchildren, Lane, Jacye and Storm Johnson; a brother, John (Betty) King of Auburntown; two sisters, Mamie Vance and Ellen Smithson, both of Woodbury; and two sisters-in-law, Glennette King of Auburntown and Benny Kay McCaslin of Woodbury.

Visitation will be Friday from 3 until 8 p.m., and the service will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Jennings and Ayers, with burial to follow at Milton Cemetery. Seth King and Wayne Lankford will officiate, with Ryan King leading the congregational singing. Friends from East Main Church of Christ will serve as Active Pallbearers and his nephews will be Honorary Pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Middle Tennessee Christian School.
