Helen Betts Maynard

Helen Betts Maynard, age 90 of Murfreesboro, died Tuesday, February 12, 2013.

She was born on March 1, 1922 in Raleigh, NC to the late Dwight Fairfax and Dessie Moore Wellons Betts. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Thomas Maynard.

Mrs. Maynard was a 1942 graduate of Meredith College. She taught elementary school and Sunday school in Raleigh, NC and served as Editor of the social column for the Greensboro Daily News during World War II. She moved to Georgetown, SC in 1950, where she was a member of Prince George Winyah Episcopal Church (circa 1730) since 1950. She was President of the Women of the Church Auxiliary, participated Annual Prince George Plantation Tours, and taught Sunday School. From 1968 until 2001, Mrs. Maynard and her husband owned and operated Hopsewee Plantation, birthplace of Thomas Lynch, Jr., signer of the Declaration of Independence, and preserved the integrity of the house and grounds, which was opened to the public as a house museum in 1970.

James Thomas Maynard, age 89 of Murfreesboro, died Monday, August 31, 2009. He was born February 16, 1920 in Williamsburg, VA to the late Edward Walker and Cassie Cooke Sheppard Maynard.

Mr. Maynard graduated from Fort Union Military Academy in Virginia in 1939, North Carolina State in 1943 with a BS Degree in Forestry. He served his country in the 82nd Airborne from 1944 until 1946, operating in the European Theater, and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his Meritorious Service. He also served in Holland, the Ardennes, and Germany. He left the service as a Captain. He served as Manager with Ingram Lumber Company before his retirement. He was a member of the Winyah Indigo Society. He was a member of the Prince George Episcopal Church, Winyah Parrish for 59 years, and served as Senior Warden, Junior Warden, and Vestryman.

They are survived by their children, James Barry Maynard (Emmaly) of Cincinnati, OH, Cassie Cooke Smith (Bayden) of Concord, NC and Betts Maynard Harrelson Barbier Nixon (Roy) of Murfreesboro; 7 grandchildren, James Thomas Maynard, Elise Ivy Maynard, Emmaly Smith Rogalski (Kyle), Benjamin Barton Smith, Helen Grace Smith, Collins Maynard Harrelson (Tracy Kay Mullins), Wellons Betts Harrelson, and 2 great-grandchildren, Lillian Grace Rogalski and Ethan James Harrelson.

A joint Memorial Service will be held at the Prince George Winyah Episcopal Church in Georgetown, SC with Interment following in Prince George Cemetery at a later date.
