David Stuart Caffrey, Sr., 87, of 1105 West William Circle, Elizabeth City, N.C. died at his residence Sunday, April 20, 2014. He was born in Beaufort, N.C. on May 5, 1926 to the late James Vernon Caffrey and Bertie Richardson Caffrey. Mr. Caffrey was a retired USPS clerk, an active member of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a former Deacon and member of its Joy Club, and was an Albemarle Hospital Volunteer. He served in US Army during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Theater obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Mr. Caffrey was a decorated US Army veteran receiving two Bronze Service Star medals along with other medals and commendations.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Williams Caffrey; a daughter, Kelly Caffrey of Elizabeth City, N.C.; a son, David Stuart Caffrey Jr. and wife, Teresa, of Chesapeake, Va.; a sister, Bessie Morse of Virginia Beach, Va.; and a brother, Thomas H. Caffrey Sr. of Richmond, Va. Also, he is survived by two grandchildren, Katherine Blair Gray and husband, Russell, and Emily Caroline DeJaager and husband, Eric; four great grandchildren, Connor David Gray, Madison Elizabeth Gray, Morgan Tessa DeJaager, and Ryan Stuart DeJaager. Mr. Caffrey was preceded in death by two brothers, James Vernon Caffrey, Jr. and George Martin Caffrey. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at 2 p.m. in the Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church by Rev. Don Carter. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family suggests memorial gifts be made to the Joy Club, % of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church, 700 N. Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. The family will receive friends and relatives at the church immediately following the service and at other times at their residence, 1105 W. William Circle, Elizabeth City, NC.
