Captain George "Pop" Edward Paul, 80, of Winterville, died Monday, March 17, 2014. He was born in Plymouth, to the late Lewis Edward Paul, and Amanda Evelyn Simpson Paul. He grew up in Bath, and moved to Norfolk, Va., where he joined the United States Coast Guard when he was 16. He was stationed in Boston, Mass., for a period of time, and then moved to Wanchese where his brother lived. It is there that he met the love of his life, Laura Daniels. He was a tugboat captain for forty five years, a member of the Wanchese Lions club, attended Bethany United Methodist Church, and was a member of the American Legion in Greenville.

Including his wife of fifty seven years, he is survived by his daughters, Lourie Proctor, and husband Ralph, of Winterville, and their children, William and Oliver; Susan Maione and husband, Joe, of Nags Head, and their children, Vincent, and Gennaro; his son, Michael Paul and wife, Kim, of Elizabeth City, and their children, Kristi, Kurtina, and Harley; his great-grandchildren, Gwen and Jayda; His sisters, Francis of Florida, Retha, and Linda, of Chesapeake, Va., and Alma, of Virginia Beach, Va.; his brothers, Harry of New York, and Elbert, of Florida. He is preceded in death by his parents and seven other siblings. Funeral service will be held at Twiford Funeral Home, 500 Budleigh St, Manteo, at 11 a.m., on Friday, March 21, 2014. A visitation for family and friends will be held, today, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at Twiford Colony Chapel. Burial will be in Cudworth Cemetery.
