ARILD NELSEN CARR

Arild Nelsen Carr, 56-year Palos Verdes resident, died peacefully at home February 9, 2013. Born in Tyler, Minnesota on April 5, 1920, Arild was the son of Danish immigrants Nels and Dagmar Carr (Kjaer). A graduate from the University of Michigan with a degree in mechanical engineering, he was a Captain in the Air Force during WWII, and served in Brazil, near Natal. Returning to Royal Oak, Michigan, Arild met Dora, who was born in Denmark, where their mothers were childhood friends. Arild and Dora were married in 1947, and celebrated their 65th anniversary last year. Arild worked as an Engineer for GM in Detroit. In 1957, he then transferred to California to work for Douglas Aircraft, and he and Dora moved their family of eight to the Palos Verdes Peninsula. It was there that Arild later started Carr Construction, using skills which were taught to him by his Father and Grandfather. Arild remained active in his work and play well into his eighties, often bicycling up the hills on a morning ride. He also had an Old Town wooden canoe, purchased in the 30's, to which he added a sail and hand-crafted accessories. He enjoyed sailing it in local marinas. Arild, 92, is survived by his wife, Dora; six children, Barry (wife Joan), Janice, Linda, (husband Pete), Rick, Debbie, Barbara (husband Charlie); and six grandchildren, Kelly, Bjorn (wife Cecilia), Kristen, Ema, Devyn, and Ben. Arild was a supportive and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and his sharp memory for story-telling and lively wit will be missed by his friends and family. A private service was held with immediate family attending. In lieu of flowers, the Carr Family suggests you may donate to Torrance Memorial Home Health and Hospice. www.Torrance Memorial.org.
