Charles (Charlie) W. Bakovic
Born June 6, 1922 and passed on January 8, 2013. Charles "Charlie" Bakovic passed away on Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at his home in Torrance, CA at the age of 90 with his family at his side. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Maggie Bakovic, who passed away in July of 2011, along with his 14 siblings. Charlie was the youngest of 15 children. Charlie is survived by his daughter, Marsha Davis, and his son Mark Bakovic, 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. His parents, Jennie and Louis Bakovic, migrated to the United States from Austria in 1906. He was born in Trinidad, CO. His family located to Long Beach in 1927. He attended Poly High School and college in the Midwest for a year after he graduated from High School. He then served in the Navy during World War II. For several years, he worked at the ship yards in Long Beach. In 1951, he was hired by Los Angeles City Fire Department, and worked for the department as firefighter and Fire Engineer until his retirement. He thoroughly enjoyed working for the Fire Department, and made many lifetime friends as a result of his employment. Family was extremely important to him. He and his family spent many hours together attending family gatherings and his family members enjoyed playing various card games. He loved fishing, college football and the NFL. He also loved horse racing. His older brothers took him to the race track as a teenager, and he had the opportunity to see Seabiscuit race. His love of horseracing was shared by many of his family members. In fact, his daughter breed a colt born last year and named the colt Cheap O Charlie in honor of her father.
