James (Sonny) Ybarra Yanes
James (Sonny) Ybarra Yanes, age 68, born Septmeber 8, 1945 and died at University Medical Center in Tucson, AZ, on Thursday, August 21, 2014.
Sonny is survived by his wife Jean, two children: Dr. James (Maureen) Yanes of Olympia, WA and Jeanine (Jason) Nunamaker of Torrance, CA., he also leaves behind five grandchildren, Sarah Yanes, Laura Yanes, Jude Yanes, Chloe Nunamaker and Reese Nunamaker.
He grew up in Torrance, the only son of Guadalupe Andrade Ybarra and Leroy Gene Smith.
Sonny attended Torrance High, '64 and Cal State Long Beach.
He is a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he served two years as a sergeant 1st Infantry in the US Army.
Sonny worked at Toyota Motor Sales USA for over 30 years from October 1969 until January 2000.
On top of being a dedicated employee to Toyota, he dedicated his time to the Redondo Beach Police Department as a Reserve Police Officer for over 20 years.
His celebration of life will be held with a rosary on Friday, August 29, 2014 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Lomita, CA at 7:00pm. Funeral Mass will follow on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Lomita, CA at 9:30 am, with the burial to follow at Green Hills Cemetery, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations to be made to Dolores Mission Church, East LA; , American Diabetics Association; or the Wounded War Project.
