John Henry Briner, Sr.

Senior chief petty officer, WWII, Korean, Vietnam War veteran, returns to his hometown Vincennes, Indiana to rest eternally. We hold you close within our hearts and there you will remain to be with us throughout our lives, until we meet again. Born in Vincennes Knox County, Indiana on November 2, 1927 to Lucinda Irene (Junkins) Briner and William Cleveland Briner. Passed peacefully March 6, 2014 in Newport Beach, California. John Henry Briner married Opal Marian Briner (passed October 26, 2008) in San Pedro, CA May 10, 1953 Together now after a short time apart may they both rest in peace. John and Opal had 6 children: 5 boys, 1 girl; 12 grandchildren: 6 boys, 6 girls; 9 great-grandchildren: 7 boys, 2 girls. Children: John Henry, Jr. wife, Debbie, Lloyd William wife, Donna, Brian Keith wife, Shirley, Bruce Kelly, Denise Eileen husband, Charles (Chuck) Spillman, Richard Daniel Briner (passed September 11, 2007) wife, Susan (passed November 12, 2005). John is survived by his sisters Leola Vantlin and Mildred Slater of Vincennes, Indiana; sister-in-law Claire Gettman of RPV, CA. Preceded in death by brothers Lloyd William Briner, Jimmy Robertson and sisters Virginia Allmon, and Ruby Robertson and brother-in-law William (Billy, Kelly) Gettman. Service to United States of America during WWII, Korean, Vietnam Wars, United States Maritime Service: June 5, 1944 - June 8, 1946. Discharged from the United States Coast Guard on August 15, 1945 and enlisted in the United States Navy on August 1946 - August 1968. Retired form State of California in 1988. John was a Lifetime Member of American Legion Post 0073, Vincennes, Indiana, member of Veteran's Foreign Wars (VFW), George E. Smith POST NO. 7142, San Clemente, CA 92673. Services coordinated by Goodwin Funeral Home, 524 Broadway, Vincennes, Indiana 47591. Military honors, internment service to be heldon Thursday, April 3, 2014, 1:00 p.m., Fairview Cemetery, 919 Willow, Vincennes, Indiana 47591. Reception to follow at VFW, Vincennes, Indiana.
