Dr. Joseph
Patrick Callinan

Dr. Joseph P. Callinan, beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather, passed away at home on February 24, 2014 surrounded in love by family. Joe was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia in 1934 and grew up in Lancaster, Ohio during the 1940's. His family moved to Downey, California in 1949. In 1956 he earned his BS degree in engineering from Loyola University of Los Angeles. In 1957 he married his beloved Lynne and together they raised eight children. He and his family were residents of Westchester from 1958 to present. Joseph later earned his MS and PhD degrees in engineering from UCLA in 1961 and 1968 respectively. Professor Callinan taught engineering at Loyola Marymount University from 1958 until he retired in 2002. During his tenure at LMU he received numerous recognitions for his contributions in science and education, including the Outstanding Educators of America Award. In 1981 he became the Dean of the College of Science and Engineering at LMU until 1990 when he returned to teaching. For three terms he served on the LMU Alumni Board of Directors. Dr. Callinan, emeritus professor of mechanical engineering, will be inducted into the LMU Faculty Hall of Fame. He leaves behind a legacy of inspiring and shaping the careers of thousands of engineers and scientists. Joseph's service spirit also reached into the community. He served on the Board of Directors for the Neighborhood Council of Westchester Playa del Rey and was a member of the Rotary Club of Westchester. Joe enjoyed traveling with his wife, and often vacationed with family and friends. For most of his career at LMU he walked to work, and later turned his passion for fitness into a sport. At age 70, he walked and completed his first LA Marathon and then followed that with seven more LA Marathons. Always the educator, he was a volunteer mentor with the LA Leggers and helped others reach their marathon goals. Joseph was a peaceful man of great integrity, kindness and compassion. He had an infectious attitude that inspired and encouraged all of us to live in the moment - Carpe Diem. He will be missed by all whose life he touched. Joseph is survived by his wife Lynne; Children, Paul (GeorgeAnn) Callinan, Christine Odom, Susan (Dane) Harrison, Marguerite (Greg) McCurley, David (Darrien) Callinan, Elizabeth (Jeff) Owens, and Michael (Imelda) Callinan and grandchildren; Patrick, Kevin and Carly Callinan, Zachary, Georgia and Rachel Odom, Jake and Jenna Harrison, Ethan and Amelia McCurley, Dylen and Donnevyn Callinan, Erica Callinan, Abigail and Daniel Callinan; siblings, Gavin Callinan and Ann Byers.
