Major John Clayton "Clay" Jones
Major John Clayton "Clay" Jones passed away on May 9, 2013 in Torrance. He was born on February 5, 1937 in San Francisco, California. Clay attended the US Military Academy at West Point receiving his BS degree and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) receiving his MS in aeronautics and astronautics. He was a major in the United States Air Force, where he served for 20 years, and received the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal and the Joint Service Commendation Medal. He had over 40 years experience as an astronautics engineer and was a systems director for Space Launch Operations at The Aerospace Corporation for 25 years. Clay was a member of St. Margaret Mary Church, in Lomita. He is survived by his loving wife, Mercy; son, Anthony Waters; daughters, Jennifer Williams and Diane Gusman; 6 grandchildren; sister, Christine Draheim; nephew, Matthew Weltsch; niece, Wendi Griffith. Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 from 4-8 p.m. at A. M. Gamby Funeral Home, Lomita. Funeral Mass will be on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, 10:00 a.m. at St. Margaret Mary Church.
