Margaret "Peggy" Burton Obituary

Peggy Burton died July 2, 2014 as a result of getting very old and having her body wear out. Despite the failing of her body, her intellect was intact until the end. Blessedly, she passed without suffering.

Born Margaret Green on September 2, 1923 in Grays, Essex, England, Peggy grew up along the Thames River in Gravesend, Kent, England. Her parents were Charles Green and Annie Clare. Her brother Bob and her sister Ellen predeceased her.

As a teenager during World War II, Peggy served in the ambulance corps in Gravesend, an area of England that was heavily bombed by the Germans. After the war, she traveled to Johannesburg, South Africa. Later, in 1952, she migrated to the United States, settling in Chicago. In 1958, she moved to the South Bay where she spent the rest of her life living in Torrance and Palos Verdes Estates. She was the mother of three boys, William Nigel Good, born in England and who predeceased her in 2008; Timothy James Good, born in South Africa; and John William Michael Good, born in Chicago.

In addition to her sons John and Tim, she is survived by her grandchildren Cheryl Waters, Cynthia Wilkinson, Meredith Weiss, Alexander Good, Charlotte Good and Celeste Good along with cousins, nephews and nieces and their children in the United States, England and South Africa. She was predeceased by her husband, George W. Burton.

Known for her English ways, her friendly charm and especially for her sense of humor, Peggy was a consistently optimistic person who exhorted her family and friends to live with a "PMA", a positive mental attitude. Combined with a natural maternal instinct, her positive outlook made her the emotional rock of the family. She was as loving a person as who ever walked this earth but at the same time was emotionally tough as nails. She never wavered.

A memorial service and ash scattering will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2014. Please call 310-379-4376 for more information. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
