Margaret Mary Berkline
March 9, 1920 - June 2, 2013
Margaret or "Peggy" as she was known to family and friends was born in Madisonville, Ohio and moved to El Segundo, CA in 1925 with her parents, Walter, Sr. and Frances, four brothers, Walter, Edward, Ben and Harry; and three sisters, Irma Gallamore, Edith Comstock and Mary Ann John. 1938 was a memorable year as she had the honor of being named "Miss El Segundo," graduated from El Segundo High School and married her high school sweet-heart, Frank. San Diego became their home while Frank served in the Navy. Later they returned to El Segundo when Frank joined the U.S. Coast Guard and was stationed in San Pedro. After serving our country in military service, Frank became an El Segundo Police Officer until his retirement in 1973. Peggy and Frank loved El Segundo and their country. Peggy attended Frank Wiggin's Trade School in Los Angeles where she learned tailoring and was well-known in the Los Angeles area for her sewing skills. She was responsible for sewing many wedding dresses, cheer and song girl uniforms, and custom garments for women throughout Los Angeles. During WW II she worked as a "Rosy the Riveter." After raising her daughters, Peggy worked outside the home and in 1991 retired from Northrop Corporation as an Executive Secretary. Peggy is survived by her daughters, Donna Haymond (Michael) of Prescott, AZ and Kathy Hall (Jim) of Downey, CA; grandsons, Michael Haymond (Carol), Robert Haymond, and Ryan Hall (Denise, fiancé); granddaughters, Carrie Schaer (Will), Mackenzie Fletcher (Jarrod), and Melissa Hall (Robert, fiancé); great grandchildren, Evan, Emily and Kyle Haymond and Madelyn Schaer; and many nieces and nephews. Peggy was predeceased by her husband, parents, all siblings and great granddaughter Sydney. A funeral mass for Peggy and Frank will be held at American Martyr's Catholic Church in Manhattan Beach on Monday, June 24th at 1:00 p.m. A reception will follow at The Parish House. Their ashes will be scattered at sea in a private ceremony at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to El Segundo High School Associated Student Body to establish a student scholarship in honor of Margaret and Frank.
