Ret. Major Joseph
E. Herr

Joseph Eugene Herr, a San Pedro resident for 56 years, was born in Union City, New Jersey on December 27, 1919. He passed away at home on August 7, 2014 at the age of 94. Joseph was preceded in death by his son, Jimmy. He is survived by his wife, Lois; daughters, Ellen McEvoy, Marie (Larry) Langner, JoAnn (Jack) Mardesich; daughter-in-law, Geraline Accetta; grandchildren, Patty (David) Bentovoja, Michael, Brian and Lindsey Langner, Matthew, Nikki and Joey Mardesich; great-grandchildren, Kelly, Kyle, Katie and Kevin Bentovoja.

Joe married his high school sweetheart, Lois Lillian Necker in 1942. They spent the early years of their marriage traveling the world as Joe served in the army for 20 years. His last assignment was at Fort MacArthur as the Post Exchange Officer. They enjoyed San Pedro so much that they decided to buy a house and settle here. During his military career, Joseph became a Major for the United States Army and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Joseph had a second career working for the State of California as a manager in the Human Resources department. He retired after 20 years of service. After retirement, Joseph's greatest joy was taking time with his children and grandchildren. He could spend hours entertaining everyone with his stories. Joseph was an intelligent man who relished in sharing his ideas, thoughts and opinions openly. He had considerable influence over three generations of his family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. There will be no services per his request.
