Richard (Bird) Godfrey

Richard was born on June 19, 1928 to John and Josephine Godfrey, passed away September 21, 2013 as a lifetime resident of San Pedro at the age of 85. Bird was one of the original Barton Hill Cougars. He worked at the PE Station where he met and later married the love of his life Catherine "Tiny" (Oriel) and together they raised 3 sons. Bird was a Korean War Veteran before becoming a proud longshoreman with the ILWU local 13 in 1955. He worked in "fabulous" ship gang 55 before becoming a gangleader for his own ship gang 16. His entire family later joined him working on the waterfront which made him very proud. Bird retired in 1993 and became a member of the ILWU pensioneers. After his retirement, he enjoyed taking trips to the casino, buying lottery scratchers, watching sports, and spoiling his 2 granddaughthers. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Tiny; his sons, Larry (Mia), Tommy, and Richard (Lisa); and his granddaughters which were his pride and joys, Taylor and Kendall. He is also survived by his sister, Carol (Alex) Dillia; his sister-in-laws, Lucille Asis and Dolores Oriel; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Mike and Jack Godfrey; and sister, Betty Freese. Services will be private. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
