Richard was born in Harbor City on January 19, 1931, and graduated from Narbonne High School. He met his wife of 63 years, Raquel Rivera, when they were teenagers. Soon after they were married, he proudly served in the United States Army and fought in the
. When he returned, he moved to Wilmington to raise his family and remained there the rest of his life. He worked many years as a longshoreman until his retirement. He passed away on May 3, 2014, surrounded by family. He was predeceased by his daughter, Suzanne. He is survived by his loving wife, Raquel; his sisters, Phyllis Hernandez and Rosie Jacquez; his sons Richard, Jr. (Julie), Michael (Barbara), and Lawrence Suarez; his daughter, Joanne (Ocky) Madrigal; and his nephew, Ron (Robbie) Ruiz. His pride and joy were his eight grandchildren David (Megan), Jeffrey (Vanessa), Brian (Rejane), Michael (Erin), Megan Suarez, Gina, Lisa, and Rudy Madrigal. He was also blessed with four great-grandchildren Zachary, Christopher, Olivia, and Milo Suarez. Richard had an affinity for the
Bruins and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He enjoyed walking around his neighborhood and talking with his neighbors. He and his wife attended every school and sporting event that their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren participated. One of his favorite pastimes was having his whole family together. He valued education and encouraged everyone to never stop learning. The family would like to thank his primary caregivers from Adia: Angie, Cynthia and Teresa. Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 5-8 at McNerney's Mortuary in San Pedro. A funeral Mass will be offered on Friday at 10:30 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Wilmington.
