Barbara Ruth Humphrey of Longmont, CO died peacefully at home Sunday, August 18 after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She was surrounded by her family, whom she loved dearly. She was 68. Barbara was born in Detroit, MI on June 27, 1945 as daughter of Bengt A. Brogren and Mildred Brogren. She was a graduate of Farmington High School and Michigan State University. Her parents were Swedish; and she was very proud of her heritage. Barbara married Donald J. Humphrey on June 15, 1968. They divorced in 2005, but remained very close until the end. Together they raised two sons, Nathan P. Humphrey (40) of Aurora, CO and Tanner J. Humphrey (37) of Longmont, CO. She is also survived by her brother Brad and his wife Linda, of Okemos, MI. Nathan and his wife Kristi have two children, Evan and Anna, who loved their grandmother very much. Tanner and his wife, Tracy, are having a baby boy at the time of this writing. Barbara was blessed by having a large extended family and many loving and supportive friends. In high school, Barb was a prom queen, cheerleader and student leader. At Michigan State she was a ski club queen, a member of ZTA sorority and student leader. Barb and Don moved to Boulder, CO in 1968 where Don attended law school at the University of Colorado. Barb taught math and science at Smiley Jr. H.S. and Louisville Middle School. Many of her students and fellow teachers remain her friends. Barb's children attended Niwot schools where she helped establish a science garden and fund for worthy teachers. She was an ardent supporter of public education. She was also an ardent supporter of athletics at Niwot and the University of Colorado. She especially loved the Buff's basketball. Barb's other passions included skiing, bowling, golf and especially volleyball. After she fell ill in 2011, Barb enjoyed going to the movies with Don when she was able. She fought her disease with courage, grace and dignity. She set an example for her family and friends. A place and time for a Celebration of Life event will be determined soon. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the Longmont Humane Society, 9595 Nelson Rd, Longmont, CO 80501.
