Harol Nees Obituary

Hal Nees, DPA (Harol Hugh Nees, II) of Tucson Arizona, passed away June 29, 2013 at Casa de la Luz Hospice in Tucson, AZ. Hal was born on January 5, 1947 to Harol Hugh and Kathryn Nees of Westminister, Colorado. He is survived by one sister, Kathryn Penrose.

He married Sally Frease ne'e Rhodes in Boulder on June 1, 1974 by Judge Horace B. Holmes. Most of Hal's life was dedicated to his community. He served as officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Division Chief for the Boulder Police Department from 1970 to 1991. He was the Boulder Police Department's Officer of the Year in 1972. While at BPD he helped create the first domestic violence prevention program in Boulder County. In addition, he served with distinction on the Board of Directors of Attention Homes in Boulder for several years.

He was the Durango Colorado Police Chief from 1991 to 1993. He was Director of Community Corrections for Boulder County from 1993-1998. He was professor of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Metropolitan State University from 1998 to 2008. He served as a Professor, College of Graduate and Continuing Studies, at Norwich University in Northfield, Vt. from 2001 to 2012.

Hal received his Doctorate in Public Administration in 1986 from University of Colorado- Denver, a Masters in Criminal Justice in 1981 from University of Colorado - Denver, a Masters of Arts from University of Northern Colorado in 1977 and a Bachelor of Science in 1969 from Northern Arizona University. Hal was awarded Professor Emeritus of Criminal Justice and Criminology on September 6, 2012 by Metro State University. He was President of the Faculty Senate at Metro State University 2004-2008, and was appointed the faculty Trustee, Board of Trustees, 2008-2011.

He is survived by Sally Nees, his wife, and was preceded in death by stepson Devon Frease.

A funeral service will be held at Darrell Howe Mortuary of Lafayette (1701 South Boulder Road) at 10:00 am on Saturday July 13. Interment will be at Green Mountain Cemetery in Boulder.
