Helen B. Winsted Obituary
Helen B. Winsted passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at Boulder Community Hospital. Helen Bender Winsted was born on September 13, 1914 on a farm near Wagner, SD. She was married to Lyle M. Bender on September 16, 1938 in Huron, SD. He died in November, 1959 in Reno, NV. Lyle is the father of her surviving three children. Helen moved to Boulder, CO in 1963. She married John Winsted in 1985. They traveled widely, attending many Elderhostel adventures together. John and Helen moved to Frasier Meadows October 23, 2000. Helen graduated from Iowa State University with a major in History and a minor in English in 1937 and completed graduate studies at Drake University, University of Nevada, and the University of Colorado. She has taught in secondary schools in Conway, IA, Sturgis, SD, Reno, NV, and Arriba, CO. She also was a substitute teacher in Boulder Valley District. Helen was involved in a variety of organizations that she loved. Among them were the Optimist Club of Boulder, Rocky Mountain Climbers Club, and the Methodist Church. Through her extraordinary works she received many awards. Some of these include a nomination to the Spunky Women of Boulder Club, selected to spend a week with Senator Wirth as an intern in Washington, D.C., was awarded the Green Smart Award of 2008 from Frasier Meadows and was profiled recently as the member of the month in the Union of Concerned Scientists publication. As a member of Methodist churches wherever she lived, Helen sang in the choirs, directed childrens' choirs and played piano for services since age 14. As a resident of Frasier Meadows, she has continued to share her talents by playing piano for vespers and providing music for memorial services and other events. She has also participated regularly in the Society for Creative Aging performances. Surviving Helen are her three children; Raymond L. Bender (Patrice), Barrington, IL, Dean R. Bender (Beth Ann), Hazlet, NJ, Janet B. Sutton, Reston, VA and her six grandchildren, Christopher, Kimberly, Elizabeth, Michael, Paul and Timothy. Also surviving are three stepsons, John Y. Winsted (Cindy), Centennial, CO, Bradley Winsted, Atlanta, GA, William Winsted (Kathy), Yorktown Heights, NY, and 14 step-grandchildren and seven step great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 10:30am on Saturday, November 10, at First United Methodist Church, 1421 Spruce St., Boulder, CO 80302. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Union of Concerned Scientists, In Memory of Helen Winsted, 2 Battle Square, Cambridge, MA 02138- 3780 or Attention Homes, In Memory of Helen Winsted, 1443 Spruce St., Boulder, CO 80302.
