John Sullivan Obituary
Lt. Col. John R Sullivan of Boulder, Co passed away at home February 15, 2014. John was born in Lakewood, New Jersey to parents Elizabeth Ripley (Seattle, WA) and Emmett John Sullivan (Henderson, CO) and was the first of three children. With his father being a career U.S. Naval aviator, John was raised throughout the U.S., having attended 21 schools by the Seventh Grade. He graduated from high school in 1950 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. His childhood shaped John's ability to quickly make friends and engage anyone in lively conversation. John graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1955, after which he joined the United States Air Force. John flew F-86 L's, T-33's, T-38's, and C-130's and was among the top three fighter pilots in his class. He had duty in Air Force Systems Command, Air Training command, received Nuclear Power Training and, in 1963, earned an MS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Colorado. Shortly thereafter, he was stationed at Craig Air force base in Selma, AL where he was a T-33 and T-38 flight instructor. John spent 15 months in Vietnam, for which he received many awards including the Distinguished Flying Cross and The Air Medal. In 1970, John and his family were transferred to Annandale, VA where he worked at the Pentagon until he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1976. John married the love of his life, Sally Katherine Whitehouse (eldest daughter of Katherine Elizabeth and Clarence A Whitehouse of Pottsville, PA) in 1958, after she graduated from Goucher College. They had two daughters Cynthia (Cindy) and Wendy. John and Sally moved back to Boulder in 1976, when John became a "stay at home dad" and earned an MBA in finance from Colorado State University. John worked as a tax accountant and taught tax classes at the University of Colorado until 1995, after which he focused on traveling the world with Sally and his other passion, the stock market. John will be widely remembered for his humor and generosity. Area waiters and waitresses knew him as "the Presidential Dollar guy," since anyone lucky enough to wait on him received several of the coins to fill their pockets. Voted "the best family man" in his high school class, John was true to form and will be greatly missed by his daughters. John was preceded in death by his wife Sally and his parents. He is survived by his daughters, Cynthia Sullivan Lyon (Bruce) of Fairfield, CA, and Wendy W Sullivan (Chad Fuller) of San Anselmo, CA; his sister Patricia Greene (William C) of Charlottesville, VA.; and his brother Michael E Sullivan (Karen) of Kingwood, TX; plus many nieces, nephews and their children. Friends and family may attend a memorial service on Saturday May 10, 2014, at 11:00 AM at Charles Baber Chapel and Cemetery (1400 W. Market Street) in Pottsville, PA 17901. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Humane Society of Boulder Valley (www.boulderhumane. org), of which John and Sally were supporters, the Charles Baber Cemetery Preservation Trust (www.babercemetery. org), or another .
