On October 15, 2013, Katherine Elizabeth (Griffin) Piltingsrud, 86, passed away peacefully in Canon City, CO. Born December 2, 1926 in Silver City, NM to Marie (Carney) Griffin and James Walter Griffin. Katherine attended the University of New Mexico and worked during World War II as a secretary for the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, NM. There she met her future husband, Clarence "Pilt" Piltingsrud and they were married on February 15, 1947. Katherine and Pilt moved to Boulder, Colorado in 1952 where Pilt was head of the Health Physics Dept. for the Rocky Flats Plant, and Katherine raised the family while maintaining an active role in the community. Katherine volunteered for Boulder Hospice, the American Cancer Society and Beta Sigma Phi. She was a member of. St. Martin De Porress Catholic Church. Pilt and Katherine were long time members at the Boulder Elks Club and attended countless functions with their friends. Katherine and Pilt retired to Canon City Colorado in 1994. Katherine had a sweet and caring personality, and she will always be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor! She always had a joke to tell, and her wit would light up a room and fill it with laughter. Katherine is survived by two sisters, Patricia Halet and Mary Jane Martens both of San Antonio, TX; her children, Thomas (Peg) Piltingsrud and Sara (Van) Hammond; five grandchildren, Richard (Svetlana) Piltingsrud, Rebecca (Scott Poe) Piltingsrud, Emily (William) Phillips, Christopher Reyes and Griffin Reyes, and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at Holt Chapel of the Garden in Canon City, CO. Memorial donations may be made to the Florence Arts Council or the Boulder Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. Arrangements are under the care of Holt Family funeral Home.
