Mary Ellen Wikoff passed away in her home on June 10th due, in part, to complications from diabetes. She was 74 years old. Mary was born in Cherokee, Iowa on August 9, 1938 to Philip and Louise Schultz. Her family eventually settled in Mason City where she grew up with two sisters and a brother. Later, Mary attended the University of Iowa pursuing a degree in Elementary Education. While at college, she met her husband, married and had two daughters. After graduation, Mary enjoyed teaching kindergarten at Horace Mann. In 1970, Mary and her family moved to Boulder, where she worked for the University of Colorado. Students adored Mary at the Cashier's Office where she worked for 15+ years. She retired from the University of Colorado in 1998 and went on to work part-time at The Cottage Montessori School in Boulder for another decade during her "fun" years. Caring for children and delighting in the presence of infants was her true love. She is preceded in death by her parents and her long-time partner who died of cancer in June of 2012. Mary is survived by her daughters Laura Wass and Heather Wikoff, her son-in-law James Wass, her sisters Judy Dalton and Rachel Schultz, her brother Ed Schultz and eight nieces and nephews as well as numerous "step" children and grandchildren. No public memorial service is planned. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation of children's books to St. Jude Children's Research Center.
