Ruth Ellen Barnard (nee) Ruth Ellen Beaty, passed peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Sunday, October 20, 2013 at the age of 85 at the Sunrise at Flatirons in Broomfield, Colorado. She was born in Union City, Indiana in 1928 to Fred and Ethel Beaty. Educated at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN, she pursued a career of teaching art and special education in Rockford, IL. She furthered her education in northern Illinois where she attained a master's degree in psychology from Rockford College in Rockford, IL. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Victor Ross Barnard of Broomfield, CO; brothers David Beaty (Joel) of Boulder, CO and Allen Beaty (Barbara) of Anderson, IN; son Mark Halverson (Nancy) of Rockford, IL; daughter Sue McDaniel (Craig) of Colorado Springs, CO; stepson Robert Barnard (Beverly) of St. Augustine, FL; stepdaughter Sherry Maciolek of Seattle, WA. Ruth also had six grand children and six great grand children. She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Rockford, IL and later became a member of the UU Church of Boulder in Boulder, CO. Ruth was an advocate for humanity and worked diligently to change the world for the betterment of man and womankind. She and Victor were founding members of Nyland Co-housing in Lafayette, CO. She loved to fold origami, employing it in her teaching career and was also an avid reader. Her hands were always busy with crafting, sewing and crocheting projects. A memorial service will held at the UU Church of Boulder Sunday, November 3rd at 4:00 pm. Please make any donations to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Boulder.
