Arthur Thomas Merchant Jr. ScotiaArthur Thomas Merchant Jr., 67, of Vley Road, passed away suddenly, Saturday, July 26, 2014 after doing the things he enjoyed most, golfing with his dear friend and boating on the Great Sacandaga Lake. The son of the late Arthur T. Merchant Sr. and Marie G. Brazell Merchant, he was born in Schenectady on November 12, 1946. Art was an Army veteran serving during the Vietnam War as a spec 5 medic. He spent his entire career at the former St. Clare's Hospital as a microbacteriaologist, retiring in 2003. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 46 years, Nancy Chicken Merchant; and children, Corey (Michelle) Merchant and Jennifer (Brian) Kristin; and the lights of his eyes, his grandchildren, Brayden (8), Dylan (5) Merchant, Hannah (6) and Hailey (3) Kristin. He is also survived by his loving sister, Barbara Garofalo; nieces, Marie Leviker , Brenda Bradshaw, Josephine Garofalo; brother-in-law, Frederick Chicken; many beloved cousins and innumerable friends. Art was an active member and former trustee of the Scotia-Glenville Elks, a member of the Broadalbin American Legion and a cherished member of Schenectady's 3rd ward. His family was his life and sharing the lake with them was his life's greatest joy. In his absence the fish will indeed over populate the lake, the Yankees or Mets will win the World Series, and his beloved Giants will win the Super Bowl. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral which will begin Friday morning at 10:15 a.m. at the Gleason Funeral Home, 730 Union Street and at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna.
