David J. Schulmerich MiddleburghDavid J. Schulmerich, 72, of Grove St., died Saturday, September 28, 2013 at the Samuel Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany after a courageous battle with ALS. Born June 26, 1941 in Bronx, he was a son of Frederick and Lillian (Noonan) Schulmerich. He attended St. Barnabas Grammar School and was a 1949 graduate of Bedford Park Academy. David was a veteran of the United States Army, proudly serving his country from 1963 until receiving an honorable discharge in 1965. He retired in 1988 after many years of duty as a police officer with NYPD. He occupied his retirement as a bus driver at West Point. In 1997, David and his family moved to Middleburgh from Highland Mills. He was a longtime member of 1013 Club of Rockland County. He became a communicant of Our Lady of the Valley in Middleburgh. He was an avid Yankees fan and truly enjoyed life, most importantly his family. David was predeceased by his sister, Katherine. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn (Zach) Schulmerich, whom he married December 2, 1967; three children, Joanne (Marc) Newsome of Middleburgh, Lillian (John) Bruno of Middleburgh, and David (Ashton) Schulmerich of Louisville, KY; his brother, Frederick (Susan) Schulmerich of Goshen; four grandchildren, Emily and Julia Newsome, and Rebecca and John Bruno; one niece and two nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 2 , 2013, at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, Main St., Middleburgh with Father William Gorman as celebrant. Family and friends are also invited to a period of visitation to be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh. Cremation will follow the Mass and inurnment will be in Gerald B.H. Solomon National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter's ALS Regional Center, 315 S.
