Joseph R. Makarowsky Amsterdam Mr. Joseph R. Makarowsky, 90, of Pleasant Avenue, Amsterdam, New York, passed away Friday, August 29, 2014. He was born October 30, 1923 in Amsterdam, New York, a son of the late John and Anna Kwas Makarowsky. He was a graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School, class of 1941, and was a lifelong area resident. Mr. Makarowsky served in the Army Air Forces from 1943 through 1946 in the 3rd Air Commando Group as a radio operator in the Western Pacific in New Guinea, Philippine and Japan locations reaching the rank of sergeant. He was employed for several years by Mohawk Carpet Company. Later, he was Manager-Shipping & Receiving at the State University at Albany (SUNY Albany), before retiring in 1985. He was a devoted member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church and served the parish as trustee for many years. He was the manager and later president of the former Ukrainian-American Citizens Club in Amsterdam, New York. He was also a member of the Hagaman-Broadalbin, New York VFW Post 8690. He is survived by his loving family including his wife, Carmella Di Gesare Makarowsky, to whom he was married September 8, 1962; his sons, Michael (Tina) Makarowsky, Amsterdam, New York, Mark (Cindy) Makarowsky, Galway, New York and John (Teresa) Makarowsky, Niskayuna, New York; grandchildren, Tyler, Nicholas, Kelly, Lexus, Mackenzie, Dharma and Brodie Makarowsky; and step-grandson, Dakota Eignor; sister, Nadia Sembrat, Vorheesville, New York; nieces, Stephanie Bornt and Melanie Sembrat; nephew, Philip Makarowsky; and cousins. The funeral service will be held at 8:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church Street, Amsterdam, New York and at 9 a.m. at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church with the Rev. Marian Kostyk. Interment with military honors will follow at St. Nicholas Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at the funeral home with Panachyda at 6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 24 Pulaski Street, Amsterdam, New York 12010.
