Leo R. Chevalier Cohoes, New YorkLeo R. Chevalier, 92, longtime resident of Guideboard Rd. in Halfmoon, entered into eternal life on Sunday, December 2, 2012 at Albany Memorial Hospital in Albany. Born and educated in Cohoes, he was the son of the late Edward and Eugenie Marion Chevalier and was the beloved husband of the late Helen Hull Chevalier, who died on August 31, 2008. Mr. Chevalier was a decorated U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was awarded the World War II Victory, Good Conduct, American Service and Asiatic-Pacific Service Medals as well as a Philippines Liberation Ribbon. He retired in 1984 from the U.S. Postal Service after having been employed at the facility on New Karner Road in Colonie for 27 years, and had previously been employed by American Locomotive in Schenectady. Leo was a co-founder and life member of the American Legion Mohawk Post #1450 in Halfmoon, a life member of the Halfmoon Fire Company, where he had been a commissioner and volunteer fireman for 73 years; in 2010 he received Firefighter of the Year Award by the Hudson Mohawk Volunteer Firefighters Association. He was a member of the Halfmoon Senior Citizens and in 2009 was awarded the Halfmoon Senior Center lifetime Achievement Award. In 2010 he was honored by the United States Postal Service on Veterans Day. In 2009, the NYS Assembly awarded Leo with a legislative resolution for his 70 years of dedicated service as a firefighter. Leo was also a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Crescent. On April 18, 2000, Leo was the recipient of a Proclamation by the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors, honoring him for his community participation and accomplishments since 1946 which contribute to the quality of life for all residents of Saratoga County. Devoted father of Denise Marie Chevalier-Pura, adored grandfather of Tracy Chevalier (Robert Deneault) and David Jacques, all of Cohoes; cherished great-grandfather of Brittany Murphy and Sean Prendergast; brother of the late Alger, Florent, Joseph, Gabriel and Raymond Chevalier, Leona Lessard, Juliette DeVoe and Cecile Waz; also survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral will be held on Thursday at 8:45 a.m. from the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 RT-9 in Clifton Park, thence to St. Mary's Church in Crescent, (86 Churchill Rd., Waterford) where at 9:30 a.m. the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Leo's relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment with military honors will be held in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Waterford.
